Post-doctoral Researcher

Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute

The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is a world leader in genomic research, with an expanding scientific programme dedicated to understanding gene function in health & disease.

Now is an extremely exciting time for the study of genetic variation. The application of new genomic technologies is poised to revolutionise our understanding of mutation processes. The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute (WTSI) is a world leader in human genetics, genome sequencing, and genome informatics. We are consolidating and expanding an ambitious programme of research using the latest experimental technologies to characterise genetic variation and unravel the molecular basis of rare diseases and complex traits. This programme combines large-scale experimental data generation, on a variety of platforms, with sophisticated data analyses to identify causal variants underlying rare diseases and complex traits.

The successful applicant will join Matthew Hurles's group at the Sanger Institute, which includes experimental geneticists as well as bioinformaticians and statistical geneticists. In addition to a fundamental focus on harnessing new technologies to identify novel disease-causing variants, our group is characterizing mutation processes in the human and mouse genomes, and in recent years has been extensively involved in characterizing the genomic extent and functional impact of variation in genomic structure.

The successful applicant will drive the generation and analysis of large-scale genome sequencing datasets and design, execute and interpret smaller-scale validation experiments with the aim of identifying the key factors influencing rates of germline mutation in mammalian genomes.

Essential Skills
We are seeking a highly motivated and talented post-doctoral researcher with experience of laboratory protocols for DNA analysis and computational analyses of genetic data, who is capable of working independently.

Ideal Skills
Knowledge of UNIX computer operating system, and Perl and R computer programming languages. Experience in high-throughput genomic research. Experience in development of new, technically-challenging laboratory protocols. Experience in studies of germline or somatic mutation.

Other information
The successful applicant would interact with a multi-disciplinary group of laboratory scientists and computational biologists. There is a strong commitment to personal and professional development with the group, and the successful applicant will be encouraged to develop their own ideas and build-up a strong academic profile.

Postdoctoral Fellows are typically in their first or second postdoctoral position as part of a period of early career research training. Successful applicant(s) who have submitted their PhD thesis and are awaiting their PhD award to be confirmed will be placed on a transitional pay point, currently £26,364. On confirmation applicants will be moved on to the pay range above.

This position is fixed-term for 3 years.

Benefits
The Institute has excellent purpose built facilities on the Genome Campus, Hinxton on the outskirts of Cambridge. We offer a comprehensive range of benefits including a final salary pension scheme and excellent on-site facilities. Further details can be found on our website.
