Statistician Postdoctoral Researcher – Genome Analysis – 73709
Organization: GN-Genomics Division
The DOE Joint Genome Institute (JGI) in Walnut Creek, CA (a division of the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab) has an exciting opportunity available for a Statistician Postdoctoral Researcher. Under general supervision of principal investigators, will perform research relevant to the missions of the Genome Analysis Group. Work as part of a team including Biologists, Bioinformaticians, and Computer Scientists, to develop and apply machine learning, statistical modeling, and pattern recognition methods to metagenome/metatranscriptome sequence data and derive testable hypotheses. Will Publish scientific manuscripts describing results. For more information about potential projects please refer to our recent publication: http://www.sciencemag.org/content/331/6016/463.full.
Specific Job Duties
Essential-
• Apply both supervised and unsupervised machine learning techniques to improve the prediction of the function of novel proteins derived from our genome and metagenome sequencing projects.
• Perform genetic pathway analysis and gene regulatory network to elucidate the relationship among gene, protein, and metabolites.
• Work with software engineers in producing generic data analysis software pipelines for the above tasks.
• Assist in the development of DOE relevant enzyme databases.
• Prepare research results for publication and for presentations at scientific meetings.
Marginal-
• Provide ad hoc general analytical support to the Genome Technology group.
Key Success Factors
• Recent PhD in Computer Science, Statistics, Biostatistics, Bioinformatics with training/experience in machine learning, pattern recognition, and statistics.
• Expertise in parametric and nonparametric statistical tests and machine learning.
• Familiarity with R, Bioconductor, MATLAB, SAS or similar statistical software.
• Familiarity with one or more of the following programming languages: C/C++, PERL, PYTHON, and JAVA.
• Knowledge of relational databases, high performance computing or cloud computing is a plus but not required
• Some background in microbiology or molecular biology is desirable.
• Commitment to and demonstrated ability to perform collaborative research in an interdisciplinary team environment
