A Postdoctoral Fellow position is available to investigate the molecular mechanisms of drug addiction and schizophrenia using human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). iPSC-derived neurons will be generated from healthy control and drug-dependent patients. Electrophysiological, biochemical and pharmacological techniques will be used to identify differences in the properties of neurons generated from patients vs controls. A study focused on the mechanisms of cocaine addiction using mouse and human iPSCs is funded by NIH. A study aimed at understanding the role of Kalirin in schizophrenia is funded by the Connecticut Stem Cell Program. Kalirin, which was identified as a genetic risk factor for schizophrenia, is required for synapse formation by rodent hippocampal and cortical neurons. These projects will be carried out in collaboration with Dr. Xue-Jun Li in Department of Neuroscience at UCHC.

Preferred Qualifications: A PhD or MD is required. Preference will be given to applicants with prior experience in electrophysiology and knowledge of cellular and molecular neuroscience. The ability to work collaboratively and think critically is essential. Experience with cell culture, real-time PCR, Western blot analysis, confocal microscopy and image analysis is beneficial. Excellent written and spoken English communication skills are expected.
