Application Deadline: 09/26/2020

The Enrico Fermi Institute of the University of Chicago is seeking applicants for a position as a Postdoctoral Scholar in the field of experimental particle astrophysics.

The successful applicant will participate in the commissioning, flight, and analysis of data from a new suborbital particle astrophysics experiment called HELIX. HELIX, the High-Energy Light Isotope eXperiment, has been designed by an international collaboration to make key measurements of cosmic- ray particle species at high energies, with unprecedented precision. The payload consists of a large superconducting magnet, a gas drift chamber, a time-of-flight system, and an aerogel ring-imaging Cherenkov detector. The first flight of the instrument is scheduled out of Antarctica's McMurdo Station at the end of 2021.

The ideal candidate will have experience in instrumentation and hardware design, with expertise in the key areas of electronics, data acquisition systems, and data analysis. They will take the lead in local hardware and software development as well as detector testing and commissioning. They will be expected to work closely with local graduate and undergraduate students as well as collaborators visiting the Chicago integration site to work on the payload. Occasional multi-week deployments to NASA test facilities and for launch campaigns will be required.

The position will start in autumn of 2020, though there is some flexibility to accommodate other schedules. This posting will remain open until a suitable candidate has been selected. Any questions can be directed to Prof. Scott Wakely using the contact information below.

A Ph.D. or an equivalent degree in physics related fields is required to be eligible, though appointment at this rank is restricted to those less than seven years beyond the attainment of a Ph.D. The University of Chicago is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity/Disabled/Veterans Employer and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national or ethnic origin, age, status as an individual with a disability, protected veteran status, genetic information, or other protected classes under the law.
