job description
The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is a world leader in genomic research, with an expanding scientific programme dedicated to understanding gene function in health & disease.
The Cancer Genome Project (CGP) at The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is at the forefront of applying the latest technologies in genome analysis in the study of human cancer. The central aim is to comprehensively characterize the full repertoire of genomic alterations that can contribute to cancer, thus empowering improvements in the diagnosis and treatment of these diseases.
A Postdoctoral Fellow position is available within the Cancer Genome Project (CGP) as part of the ICGC Prostate Cancer initiative which aims at a comprehensive analysis of coding mutations and gene rearrangements of 250 whole genome shotgun datasets. The systematic collection of these data will help identify the genes and genetic mechanisms involved in the genesis of this disease and will ultimately empower improved detection, prevention and treatment. Comparisons of cancers arising in high and low risk areas of the world and of tumours at stages of development may provide insights in cancer aetiology and mechanisms of disease progression.
This position will be supervised by Dr. Andy Futreal, Head of Cancer Genetics and Genomics and Dr. Peter Campbell, Group Leader of Cancer Genome Project. The research will involve investigation of somatic mutations in human prostate cancer from perspectives ranging from identification of new cancer genes and the elaboration of the somatic genetic architecture of cancers through to the analyses of mutation spectra to more fully understand the potential roles of exposure and repair in shaping cancer genomes – all extensively utilising next generation sequencing data.
For informal enquires about this position please contact Dr Andy Futreal (paf@sanger.ac.uk) and/ Dr. Peter Campbell (pc8@sanger.ac.uk).
Essential Skills
The successful candidate will have a PhD in a scientific discipline. As interactions between internal team members and external collaborators will be key, they will have excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to prioritise tasks in order to work independently.
Ideal Skills
• Experience in cancer genomics
• Publication record
• Previous experience in working with large-scale (empirical and/or simulated) datasets
Other information
Postdoctoral Fellows are typically in their first or second postdoctoral position as part of a period of early career research training. Successful applicant(s) who have submitted their PhD thesis and are awaiting their PhD award to be confirmed will be placed on a transitional pay point, currently £26,103. On confirmation applicants will be moved on to the pay scale above.
Background
The Cancer Genome Project (CGP) at the Institute has led the way in the systematic analysis of cancer genomes by using the human genome sequence and high throughput mutation detection techniques to identify somatically acquired sequence variants/mutations and hence identify genes critical in the development of human cancers (http://www.sanger.ac.uk/genetics/CGP/).
Please state your current salary in the covering letter.
This position is available as a fixed term for 2 years
Benefits
The Institute has excellent purpose built facilities on the Genome Campus, Hinxton on the outskirts of Cambridge. We offer a comprehensive range of benefits including a final salary pension scheme and excellent on-site facilities. Further details can be found on our website https://jobs.sanger.ac.uk,
