Based in Lecce, a town rich in history and artistic heritage close to one of the most beautiful seas in Italy, CBN-IIT is an IIT centre offering a large scale facility for bio-molecular and organic materials and nanoscale biomolecular interactions. The main target is the development of nanostructured materials with advanced mechanical, chemical and electronic functionalities and the investigation of the cellular toxicity of such nanostructured compounds, in view of future nano-safety standards of certification with the EHS platform. EHS is dedicated to studying nanotoxicology along understanding the interaction between nanomaterials and living systems. The primary aim is to identify the responses of biological systems upon interaction with nanoscale materials (i.e., nanoparticles, nanostructured substrates, etc.), identifying and categorizing the responses based on the physical-chemical assessment of the nanomaterial by applying a variety of multidisciplinary approaches (nanochemistry, nanotoxicogenomics, nanoproteomics and advanced imaging tools). Both cell lines and simple animal models are explored in this respect, in order to develop appropriate metrological tools that can provide a general assessment of potential toxicity of nanoparticles.
EHS platform also includes projects for the development of innovative biosensors for diagnostics.

Within an international and multidisciplinary environment, we are currently aiming to recruit a pool of talented, energetic, strongly motivated, young and senior scientists to work on the EHS research themes.

2 PostDoctoral positions are currently available in the fields of nanotoxicology (funded by IIT and the ITS Nano in the frame of FP7 projects).

Eligibility:

(i) The candidate must have a Ph.D in nanobiotechnology/nanomedicine/nanotechnology/nanochemistry and be within the early years of their career in research;
(ii) Good working knowledge of nanobiotechnology, nanomedicine, nanotechnology, nanotoxicology.
(iii) Ability to use advanced imaging techniques for monitoring nanobiointeractions and nanotoxicology
(iv) or ability to use mass spectrometry techniques (quantification tools and imaging are additional requirements)
(v) or ability to synthesize innovative nanoparticles with smart properties.
(vi) Good knowledge of state-of-the-art NPs/living system interactions.
(vii) Familiarity in biological effect of nanomaterials with tunable/smart properties upon physical and external stimuli.
(viii) Proactive attitude and results-oriented mindset.
(ix) Good interpersonal and communications skills and willingness to integrate in a multidisciplinary research team (including biologists, chemists, biotechnologists, physicists).
(x) Good knowledge of English and ability to manage/write papers and international projects.
(xi) Excellent track record of publications in top-tier journals in the areas of nanomedicine, nanobiotechnology and material science.
