Job Description

Description
The Building Equipment Research (BER) Group in the Energy and Transportation Science Division (ETSD) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking an Energy Analysis Post-Graduate researcher. The BER Group provides support to U.S. residential and commercial buildings to improve energy efficiency. The work in the group focuses on equipment testing, field testing in research houses and commercial buildings, modeling, and program evaluation support to sponsors. Modeling and testing emphasizes advances in equipment efficiency and methods for integrating energy functions to reduce energy and peak demand. This work is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, under the Building Technologies Program within the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy.

Qualifications
A Master’s degree is required. The successful candidate will provide technical and analytical support for the modeling and validation of advanced heat exchanger concepts. CFD simulations will be used whenever heat transfer and pressure drop correlations are not applicable. ANSYS FLUENT® will be used as the CFD simulation engine; the candidate is expected to provide additional CFD functionality in FLUENT© using C and scheme programming languages. Furthermore, the candidate is expected to develop approximate models or correlations based on the CFD simulations for use in segmented steady state and transient heat exchanger simulation tools. The candidate will also integrate the advanced heat exchanger concepts modeling tools in different systems simulation platforms in order to evaluate their impact on system performance. The main target is to improve the overall system efficiency. The candidate will document results in technical reports and peer reviewed publication, and present results to sponsors and in technical conferences and forums. This position requires a strong understanding of CFD simulations, object oriented programming, heat transfer, and thermodynamic cycles. Applicants cannot have received the most recent degree more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment.

How to Apply:
Qualified applicants must apply online at https://www3.orau.gov/ORNL_TOppS/Account/LogOn. All applicants will need to register before they can begin the online application.

This appointment is offered through the ORNL Postgraduate Research Participation Program and is administered by the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE).
