The Fraunhofer Institute for Biomedical Engineering (IBMT) in Potsdam, Germany, is an application-oriented research institute. It is located on a modern science campus comprising two Fraunhofer institutes, three Max Planck institutes and the University of Potsdam, in the immediate vicinity of bustling Berlin. We offer an open and stimulating scientific environment, a range of exciting projects and excellent research equipment. One focus is on taking full advantage of the benefits of cell-free protein synthesis by transferring it from the lab bench to larger scale commercial applications, e. g. through automation. In this context, IBMT is recruiting three scientists:
(1) Mass spectrometry and proteomics (postdoctoral level or qualified engineer)
Cell-free synthesis is particularly suited for the production of glycoproteins and membrane proteins. The evaluation of novel methods for the purification and analysis of these biomolecules are key elements of this research. We seek an expert for the theory and practice of nanoLC-MS/MS of proteins as well as data analysis tools for protein identification, detection of posttranslational modifications and protein quantification. The required profile includes a degree in chemistry, chemical engineering or biochemistry with a focus on protein chemistry.

(2) Functional analysis of membrane proteins (postdoctoral level)
In vitro translation systems have become versatile tools for the expression and functional characterization of integral membrane proteins. In this context, receptor tyrosine kinase signalling, activation of G-Protein-coupled receptors, reconstitution and characterization of carrier proteins in biological and synthetic bilayer membranes are in the focus of our current research activities. We are seeking a candidate for the functional characterization of membrane proteins and their downstream signalling. We expect the candidate with a degree in biophysics or biochemistry to have a strong background in membrane protein technologies including fluorescence microscopy methodology and pharmacological characterization.

(3) Lab-on-chip technology (postdoctoral level)
The responsibility is to collaborate in the development of a microfluidic reactor for the ribosomal translation of mRNA into a protein. In particular, fluid-fluid interfaces for the transfer of either mRNA or proteins between compartments have to be implemented as well as molecule separation methods. This demands conceptualisation of technical solutions, experimental realisation of same, systematic tests for evaluation and optimisation as well as analysis. The required profile is that of a PhD in biophysics, physical chemistry, mechanical process engineering, microsystems engineering or related studies with a thorough emphasis on microfluidics. Programming skills would be a plus.
